Abstract

MUNOZ RUIZ, Emilio  and  GARCIA, Marta Plaza. Instantáneas y paisajes sobre biotecnología en la prensa española: Análisis de prensa de tres aplicaciones biotecnológicas en el año 2002: alimentos y cultivos transgénicos, terapia génica y clonación. Rev. iberoam. cienc. tecnol. soc. [online]. 2004, vol.1, n.3, pp.183-219. ISSN 1850-0013.

This article presents the results of a quantitative and qualitative analysis focused on the information about biotechnology published by a selected sample of written media in Spain. Results show, from the quantitative point of view, that there has been a considerable volume of journalistic texts about biotechnology in 2002. A respectable amount out of them, 4%, was published in the front page of the journal. From a qualitative perspective, we have focused on the journalistic balance and professionalism of the texts. From the data it is concluded that only in one third of the studied cases the information presented was verified. Almost half of the texts (42%) clearly declare themselves for or against these technologies.

Keywords : Biotechnology; Scientific information; Evaluation; Public opinion.
