Abstract

This paper analyses the theoretical nature of scientific controversies, as well as their definition and the role developed in the models of scientific dynamic. After discussing the existing theories from a macrodynamic and a microdynamic perspective of science, the author proposes the notion of "controversy fields" in order to determinate a better comprehension of scientific controversies and to improve the explanation of their closures. In order to illustrate the ideas, the author develops the study of case of history on the toxicity of saccharin.
