Abstract

SA, Susana  and  ANDRADE, Ana Isabel. Aprender a respeitar o outro e o planeta: potencialidades da educação para o desenvolvimento sustentável nos primeiros anos de escolaridade. Rev. iberoam. cienc. tecnol. soc. [online]. 2008, vol.4, n.11, pp.115-138. ISSN 1850-0013.

The present world is characterised by an outstanding technological development and scientific progress. However, this development/ growth carries out serious environmental, social, political and economical calamities. Bearing in mind these problems one believes that it becomes more and more peremptory for education to enable citizens, since the early school years, to have the awareness and commitment skills needed for the fulfilment of necessary changes in our practices and attitudes towards planet earth and the others. Consequently, the project we develop fits in the domain of the educational concerns of the United Nations Decade for Education for Sustainable Development. Furthermore, this project is also a pedagogic proposal that aims at promoting diversity (in its different ways) and citizenship education, having as the starting point a flexible management of the curriculum in the primary or elementary schools3. Thus, it is our aim with this communication to present a study, based on an intervention project in a primary school class (8 and 9 years old children), which had as its main goal the conception, implementation and evaluation of awareness activities towards linguistic, cultural and biological diversity. These very activities were conceived regarding an education for sustainable development.

Keywords : Linguistic and cultural diversity; Sustainable development; Education; Interdisciplinary.
