Abstract

VILCHES, Amparo; GIL PEREZ, Daniel; TOSCANO, Juan Carlos  and  MACIAS, Óscar. Obstáculos que pueden estar impidiendo la implicación de la ciudadanía y, en particular, de los educadores, en la construcción de un futuro sostenible: Formas de superarlos. Rev. iberoam. cienc. tecnol. soc. [online]. 2008, vol.4, n.11, pp.139-162. ISSN 1850-0013.

Despite numerous warnings and repeated calls from experts and institutions worldwide regarding the serious problems that humanity must confront, the majority of people who receive these messages fail to react and continue with their normal activity and style of life, adapting to apparently small changes, but which in few decades are dramatically modifying living conditions on Earth and already affecting billions of human beings. This lack of response is one of the main reasons why the United Nations Organisation introduced the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). It is aimed at involving educators of all levels and in all fields from all over the world in the training of citizens in order to build a sustainable future. This article intends to analyse some of the obstacles that are impeding the involvement of society as a whole, including most educators, political leaders and even many scientists, in the building of a sustainable future and to suggest how such barriers should be tackled.

Keywords : Education for sustainability; Scientific literacy for responsible citizenship; Decision making; Science-technology-environment-society (STES) relationships.
