Abstract

BABINI, Dominique. Open access to scientific output from Latin America and the Caribbean. Rev. iberoam. cienc. tecnol. soc. [online]. 2011, vol.6, n.17, pp.31-56. ISSN 1850-0013.

A decade of open access initiatives in Latin America shows minimal presence in those initiatives of articles published in international journals by researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean. Advances in the international open access movement, with mandates that require self-archiving in institutional repositories, anticipate that a growing number of articles published in international journals by researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean will also be available in open access. This article describes the open access initiatives in Latin America and the presence of the region in international indexes to identify which are the institutions of the region with more scientific output and visibility of its output in the web, with the aim of making those institutions visible for national and regional integration strategies of open access to national or regional scientific output. Results show a leading position of universities from Brazil; strong presence of universities from México, Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Venezuela; and presence of universities from Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Uruguay.

Keywords : Open access; Institutional repositories; Science policy; Latin America and the Caribbean.
