DELGADO, Arnoldo Oscar. The Laboratory of Materials Testing and Technological Research of the Ministry of Public Works of the Buenos Aires province: The history of an Argentine pioneer. Rev. iberoam. cienc. tecnol. soc. [online]. 2014, vol.9, n.26, pp.11-37. ISSN 1850-0013.
First of its kind in Argentina, and promptly recognized all over Latin America, the Laboratory of Materials Testing of the Ministry of Public Works of the Buenos Aires Province (LEMOP) was opened in 1942 under the motto “Science and Research to the service of Technique and Industry”, commitment that was deepened two years later, after LEMOP’s mutation into the Laboratory of Materials Testing and Technological Research (LEMIT). The Second World War was imposing a new scenario to the national productive sector. Having reached its consolidation under Colonel Mercante’s government (1946- 1952), since 1955 LEMIT faced numerous difficulties that would end in its dissolution and reformulation by the military dictatorship in 1979, being its constituent parts incorporated to the Commission of Scientific Research of the Buenos Aires province. This work aims at analysing the factors that contributed to its creation, expansion and consolidation, as well as those that limited its performance and defined the devastating situation described by the commission itself after taking LEMIT under its wing. Additionally, this paper highlights the innovative features that, according to our opinion, confirm its pioneering nature among national institutions of science and technology
