GARRIDO LARREGUY, Florencia. Hacker Work, Synthesis Of Labor, Work And Action: Two Philosophical Perspectives Of Work In The Information Age. Rev. iberoam. cienc. tecnol. soc. [online]. 2016, vol.11, n.32, pp.165-187. ISSN 1850-0013.
Hannah Arendt differentiates thee activities of the vita activa (active life): "labor", "work", and "action". She defines "work" comparing it to "labor" and "action," where labor is related to the natural cycle of life and the fulfillment of basic needs, and "work" is capable of creating a universe of things that transcends its producer. On the other hand, Pekka Himanen proposes an alterative to work-centrism in the Information Age: the "hacker work". This peculiar activity is characterized by workers’ management of their own time, and the passion they express through their creativity. We will define "work" and "time" according to both authors to show how the "hacker work" presents the three aspects of Arendt’s active life. Then, we will briefly comment on the results obtained based on a comparative analysis.
