We propose to analyze the distribution of resources available for research in the particular case of the social sciences and humanities and describe the place that these disciplines occupy in the structure of the Argentine scientific-university field. We will center our analysis on the two institutions that have historically supported research: the National Council of Scientific and Technological Research (CONICET, due to its acronym in Spanish) and national universities. In order to do this, we have built several databases about the institutes and researchers that make up the abovementioned institutions. In the first part, we review some of the theoretical guidelines on which we base our perspective and look at some of the scientific policy measures that modified the disciplinary structure of the Argentine scientific field from the 1950s until now. We then analyze the institutional, regional and disciplinary distribution of research capacities, and present a comparison between the two central supports of these fields, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA, due to its initials in Spanish) and CONICET. The main results indicate that there are marked institutional and disciplinary asymmetries. The social sciences are concentrated in the universities, while CONICET favors other areas, and UBA has a fundamental role in these fields due to the marked concentration of resources for the research under its aegis.
