Abstract

VIRUEGA, Ángel J; HERRERA, Roberto  and  ROJAS, Héctor P. Cavernomas del tronco encefálico: presentación de dos casos y revisión bibliográfica. Rev. argent. neurocir. [online]. 2006, vol.20, n.1, pp.25-35. ISSN 1850-1532.

Objective: To describe 2 new cases of brain stem cavernomas and to analyze the rol of surgery in their treatment. Description: The first case (m, 31 years-old)  presented subacute dizziness, ataxia and diplopia and the second case (m, 44 years-old) presented acute headaches, dizziness and ataxia, caused by hemorrhages. In both cases the magnetic resonance showed a cavernoma located in the mesencefalo-pontine region (case 1) and in the left medial cerebellar peduncle (case 2). Both patients were taken to surgery. Intervention: The first case was approached through the floor of the iv ventricle, in the midline and rostral to the teres eminence and the second case was approached transcerebellary. In both the resection was complete. Postoperative magnetic resonances showed no lesions and the outcome was satisfactory with minimal morbidity. Conclusion: the treatment of these cases and the reports reviewed, confirmed that surgery can be a sound therapeutic option for brain stem cavernomas.
