Abstract

GARRIGA ZUCAL, José. "They had it coming.": Moral definition of the use of physical force for the members of the Buenos Aires police. Cuad. antropol. soc. [online]. 2010, n.32, pp.75-94. ISSN 1850-275X.

This work we will examine the moral definitions of the Buenos Aires police in relation to the use of physical force. We propose in these pages to analyze, from the police point of view, what force uses are legitimate and, therefore, morally accepted, and which are rejected. We will investigate the moral definitions that delimit the permitted and the forbidden, the just and the unjust regarding the use of physical force. To discover and to analyze these limits allows us to study the establishment of a work practice that supports and legitimates practices that frequently are illegal.

Keywords : Police; Moral; Use of force; Violence; Legitimacy.
