Abstract

LUJAN VERON, David. Activating neighborhood and friendship bonds. Cuad. antropol. soc. [online]. 2021, n.53, pp.181-197.  Epub May 06, 2021. ISSN 1850-275X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.34096/cas.i53.7681.

This article draws on contributions from the category of political work and from socio-anthropological studies of clientelism to highlight, through ethnographic fieldwork, the strategies of certain candidates running for councillor in Chile to obtain the popular vote during the municipal elections of 2016. In addition, it examines their interactions with different operators and potential voters, and delves into the campaign of a candidate for councillor from Christian Democracy (DC). The findings encourage us to improve our understanding of the resources, skills and abilities involved in winning the vote, the connection between electoral organization and local networks, as well as the way in which the relationships between voters, intermediaries and candidates occur.
