CARBALLO MARINA, Flavia e ERCOLANO, Bettina. La ocupación humana en la margen sur del lago Argentino, Santa Cruz, Argentina. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2003, n.4, pp.45-59. ISSN 1850-373X.
Climatic fluctuations that have taken place since the late Pleistocene and during the Holocene in southernmost Patagonia, characterized by phases of ice advance and retreat and periods of drought, conditioned the available resources for human populations occupying the Lago Argentino basin. These circumstances also affected both internal and mobility and that towards other regions. In this paper, new distributional data from Lago Argentino's southern edge are presented and discussed. Finally, these data are integrated with archaeological and paleoenvironmental background information. The archaeological materials recovered from transects andsites are similar to those recovered previously along lowlands around the lake in regards to artefactual classes and ranking, type and frequency of raw material, and technological properties. However, the regional artifact densities of the southern edge of the lake are slightly lower than those of the northern edge. This is related to a broader and gentler landscape and a higher number of rock shelters, offering more variability for location and thus is used less intensively.
