Abstract
BELARDI, Juan Bautista and CARBALLO MARINA, Flavia. Tafonomía regional en la cuenca media del río Coyle (Santa Cruz, Patagonia Argentina). Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2003, n.4, pp.59-73. ISSN 1850-373X.
A taphonomic database for guanaco (Lama guanicoe) and choique (Pterocnemia pennata) is presented. It was created from environmental impact assessments carried out in the Middle Coyle Basin, Argentinean southern Patagonia. Information is presented according to landscape units, corresponding to terraces and valley bottoms. They are suitable as spatial units and for the generation of taphonomic expectations. Superimposition and potential mixing of archaeological artefacts and bones deposited naturally are discussed. Different taphonomic variables for guanaco and choique are analyzed by landscape unit, and the information obtained is compared. Results show that under present conditions contamination in terraces and valley bottoms is low. Nevertheless, in the past a greater abundance of natural bones and a denser vegatational cover would have created more favourable conditions for natural bone contamination. This taphonomic information is in accordance with that obtained in the Upper Santa Cruz basin and the Middle and Lower Gallegos basin.
