L'HEUREUX, Gabriela Lorena. Estudio comparativo de muestras arqueofaunísticas de guanaco (Lama guanicoe) de la cuenca superior del río Santa Cruz. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2003, n.4, pp.75-85. ISSN 1850-373X.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the natural and cultural processes intervening in the formation of the archaeofaunal assemblages from three archaeological sites, located in very different settings in the Upper Santa Cruz Basin: 1) Alero del Bosque; 2) El Sosiego 2; and 3) Piedra Quemada. The analysis was focused on the post-depositional and anthropic modifications in samples of guanaco bones (Lama guanicoe). Elements from the apendicular skeleton of adult individuals (>2 years old) dominated all the assemblages. Most of the bones were highly fractured, especially in the case of Piedra Quemada. Bone weathering ranges were wide, although the mean from Alero del Bosque was significantly lower than the means calculated for the two other sites. El Sosiego 2 shows the highest frequencies of post-depositional bone modifications. The expected differences between sites from the highlands (Piedra Quemada) and from the lowlands (Alero del Bosque and El Sosiego 2), relative to the age profiles and differential representation of skeletal parts, were not found, probably as a result of the extremely high degree of bone fragmentation in all the analyzed samples.
