The aim of this paper is to analyze theoretical issues related to the management of archaeological heritage, archaeological praxis, and the role of aboriginal and Creole communities. Three experiences of rescue archaeology conducted at indigenous cemeteries located in Neuquen Province, Argentina, form the basis of this analysis. In all cases local communities claimed to be the owners of the archaeological materials. These experiences are a starting point for thinking about "the social construction of cultural heritage". It is argued that archaeological praxis and the management of the archaeological heritage should take into account sociocultural contexts and the symbolic perceptions of communities.
