Abstract

SUBY, Jorge A.  and  GUICHON, Ricardo A.. Densidad ósea y frecuencias de hallazgos en restos humanos en el Norte de Tierra del Fuego: Análisis exploratorio. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2004, n.5, pp.95-104. ISSN 1850-373X.

The availability of biological human assemblages is conditioned by palaeoecological and taphonomic processes. In this sense, the representation of elements constitutes an important source of information. Related to this aspect, we are concerned with the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and relative frequencies on the north coast of Tierra del Fuego. The acquisition of BMD data has not been used frequently in the study of human bone remains. This is a non-destructive method that provides information about bone properties and the processes that could affect them. The BMD analysis has not been used in the case of human fossil records from Tierra del Fuego. We related the BMD data obtained from human remains from Las Mandíbulas site to the frequencies of human bone assemblages from archaeological sites from the north coast of Tierra del Fuego, which were discriminated between surface and excavation sites. This comparison displays some trends indicating that the elements with major BMD are more represented in surface sites. In contrast, the representation of elements in excavation sites seems not to depend on BMD. The results indicated that bone representation is not homogeneously linked to BMD in this region, and that the post-depositional history plays an important role in the development of taphonomic processes that affect the human bone fossil record. This is the first stage in the study of intrinsic bone properties associated with taphonomic processes in Tierra del Fuego.

Keywords : Mineral bone density; Human fossil record.
