Abstract

LOPEZ CAMPENY, Sara M. L.; OLIVERA, Daniel E.; FERNANDEZ VARELA, Virginia  and  PENA, Josefina. Procesos tafonómicos, subsistencia y uso del espacio: análisis de la arqueofauna de un sitio agropastoril de la Puna Meridional Argentina (Punta de la Peña 9, Antofagasta de la Sierra, Catamarca). Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2005, n.6, pp.11-28. ISSN 1850-373X.

The results of the analysis of an assemblage of faunal bone remains recovered from an architectural structure (E2) excavated in the site Punta de la Peña 9 are presented. The site is located in the Intermediate Sectors (3600 m. above-sea-level) in the micro-region of Antofagasta de la Sierra (Catamarca, Southern Puna, Argentina). The analysis included an evaluation of the effects of the formation processes of the archaeological record, a study of the bones from an economic perspective, and an analysis of the spatial distribution of bones in the occupation levels of the enclosure. Examination of these three broad dimensions of this archaeofaunal assemblage enabled us to study multiple aspects of this site. Among such aspects the following are emphasized in this paper: evaluation of the effect of the formation processes of the archaeological record on the integrity of the bone assemblage; peculiarities in the use of space in the analyzed structure; certain characteristics of the occupational sequence of the structure itself; systems of discard and maintenance of the spaces that were used intensively; and the set of activities carried out, and the patterns connected with, the exploitation, selection of parts, and consumption of fauna.

Keywords : Southern Puna of Argentina; Archaeofaunal record; Formation processes; Use of space; Patterns of fauna consumption.
