Architecture and craft production are basic elements of archaeological approaches to social complexity. However, studies of places where metals and pottery were made in the past have been scarce until the present, both in the Argentine Northwest and the Andean area in general. Usually, a distinction is found in the literature between architectural compounds of a domestic type and those that constituted settings for production. The contrast between the terms "domestic" and "non-domestic", and even the opposition of the two terms, offers an interesting point of departure for discussing cases of discrete installations that were part of the large social settlements in the Yocavil Valley prior to the Spanish Conquest. Results of the analysis of remains of buildings, outdoor places and associated features at Rincón Chico, Catamarca, are discussed. Based on ethnographic observations of forms of residence and production in the contemporary world it is concluded that the distinction referred to is elusive for Andean pre- Hispanic societies. What emerges from the analysis is a complex view of spatial compounds of a mixed nature, where specialized and domestic production were closely related.
