DE LA FUENTE, Guillermo Adrián y PEREZ MARTINEZ, Juan Manuel. Studying Paintings On "Aguada Portezuelo" Archaeological Ceramics (Ca. Ad 600-900) From Northwest Argentina: New Evidence From An Archaeometric Approach Using Raman Microspectroscopy (Rms). Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2008, n.9, pp.173-186. ISSN 1850-373X.
Raman microspectroscopy (RMS) is currently a well established analytical technique for pigment identification in archaeological pottery that enables the in situ study of art objects through a totally non destructive approach. Information on the chemical nature of the different pigments used by ancient potters to decorate ceramic vessels can be obtained directly through the application of this analytical technique. In this paper, the first analytical results obtained from the study of pre- and post-firing paintings in Aguada Portezuelo archaeological ceramics, from Middle Period (ca. AD 600-900) Northwest Argentina are presented. With the objective of exploring the origin of the pigments used in the past by potters, several paintings of red, black, and brown colours were analyzed by Raman microspectroscopy. Additionally, the chemical nature of the white coloured pre-firing slip characteristic of most of this ceramic type was studied and the molecular structure of the black coloured internal surfaces of theceramic bowls was explored.
