In this paper the chipped stone artifacts and grinding stone tools recovered at Loma de los Antiguos, Belén, Catamarca, are analyzed. This archaeological site consists of 43 structures surrounded by defensive walls and is located on a 200 m high hill. Different types of analysis (pottery, architectural and radiocarbon dating) associate the occupation of this town to groups within the Belén culture, between the end of the Regional Developments period and the Inka conquest. An exploratory study of the lithic materials from the site generated information on raw material exploitation and lithic production. Among the chipped stone artifacts the use of different raw materials (volcanic and sedimenty rocks) is observed. Among volcanic rocks, obsidian stands out for its high percentage and widespread distribution at the site in comparison to the rest of the identified lithic materials (sandstones, basalts, and pelitic rocks). This raw material is linking with projectile points and it seems to have been exploited exhaustively. Artifacts modified by use among the grinding stone tools include granite and sandstone manos.
