Abstract

RAMOS, María Alejandra. What Is Autism?: The Experience Of Parents Immersed In Uncertainty. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2010, vol.11, n.1, pp.73-88. ISSN 1850-373X.

Following an examination of the historical process for the recognition of autism as a disease, this article focuses on its detection and treatment in Capital Federal and Gran Buenos Aires, Argentina. The experiences of parents of people diagnosed with autistm were explored through one form of organization: Internet forums. Starting from the description and interpretation of the content of the messages, it was observed that parents see their daily practices transformed when faced with distressing situations, as well as when following strategies to find information to improve care. Different key moments in the medical narrative have influenced parental mind-set toward their children and their interaction with them. At the same time, the initiative of affected families has contributed to the restructuring of the care system.
