PEREZ WINTER, Cecilia. Trends In The Lithic Record During The Middle Holocene: Arroyo Malo 3 Site, Upper Atuel River Valley, Southern Mendoza. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2010, vol.11, n.1, pp.159-172. ISSN 1850-373X.
Many parts of southern Mendoza lack archaeological information and radiocarbon dates for the middle Holocene, between ca. 7000 and 4000 radiocarbon years BP. Local researchers believe this is an occupational hiatus. However, alternative explanations have been proposed. Paleoenvironmental records indicate increased aridity during the middle Holocene. This process of aridization may have affected the organization of human populations in southern Mendoza. The middle Holocene record of occupation in the upper Atuel river valley is represented at the Arroyo Malo 3 site. This report presents some trends in the lithic record, from ca. 8900 to 2200 radiocarbon years BP. In comparison with the early Holocene, the middle Holocene lithic record indicates increased mobility, decreased site occupation intensity and a change in raw material use, among other things.
