Abstract

CERLETTI, Laura Beatriz. Families And Schools: Contributions Of An Ethnographic Investigation To The Discussion Of Assumptions About The Conditions For Children's Schooling And The Category "Family". Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2010, vol.11, n.1, pp.185-198. ISSN 1850-373X.

This paper is focused on a discussion about the relationship between families and schools, based on the analysis of documentation and ethnographic records. The aim is to question some assumptions that prescribe certain modes of family organization, and a particular way of interaction between families and schools, as necessary conditions for the schooling of children. Specifically, a document by UNICEF is analyzed. This document is part of a Program directed to "schools and families". The analysis is organized in four dimensions: the position given to families and their relation with schools, the modes in which this relation is expected to be developed, the appeals to parents, and some meanings attributed to education and schooling. Additionally, the analysis of interviews and participant observation, recorded through ethnographic fieldwork, enables the diversity of practices and meanings constructed by subjects in every-day life to be demonstrated. This, in conjunction with a revision of the category "family", strengthens the discussion of the aforementioned document. The purpose is to show the complexity of the relations between schools and families and the multiplicity of articulations between domestic organization and schooling, which prove the impossibility of establishing determinisms.

Keywords : "Families"; Schooling; Domestic Organization.
