Abstract

FERNANDO, Santiago; SALEMME, Mónica; SUBY, Jorge  and  GUICHON, Ricardo. Human remains in northern Tierra del Fuego : context, diet and paleopathology. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2011, vol.12, n.1, pp.147-162. ISSN 1850-373X.

Archaeological excavations, most of them rescues, carried out between 2000 and 2007 at eight pre-Hispanic sites along the Atlantic coast of Tierra del Fuego produced 11 human skeletons from burials of different types. This paper discusses burial type, distribution and post-depositional processes, as well as the paleopathologic, chronological and isotopic skeletal analyses that reveal dietary patterns. On a regional scale, these new bioanthropological data add to knowledge of an area of Tierra del Fuego that is in desperate need of further research. On a supra-regional scale, the results support previous interpretations of the biocultural diversity found in the human groups that inhabited southern Patagonia during the Holocene.
