Resumen
LEONI, Juan B et al. Contributions to the characterization of early ceramic period village societies in the Quebrada de Humahuaca: a view from Antumpa. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.1, pp.117-131. ISSN 1850-373X.
In this paper information about the Early Ceramic or Formative component of the Antumpa site, Department of Humahuaca, Jujuy, is presented. This site is one of the few currently known in the area from that period. As such, the information discussed here enhances available knowledge about the village societies that inhabited the area during the first millennium A.D. In particular, we describe the excavations of a mound, which uncovered early architecture associated with a floor or occupation level. We present a description of the materials recovered as well as the radiocarbon dates obtained, which place this occupation in the final part of the local Early Ceramic or Formative Period. The artifact assemblage recovered shows similarities with contemporary sites (e.g. red and brown polished pottery, ceramic smoking pipes, small triangular projectile points, lithic hoes) but also shows some peculiarities (e.g. absence of the typical Polished Gray pottery, presence of ceramics similar to styles from the eastern lowlands) that could be indicative of a cultural modality specific to the northern sector of the Quebrada de Humahuaca.
