Abstract

PEREZ PIERONI, María Josefina. An initial approach to ceramic manufacture at Río Herrana archaeological sites, south Pozuelos basin, Puna of Jujuy. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.1, pp.197-210. ISSN 1850-373X.

This paper summarizes the first results of macroscopic and submacroscopic analyses of ceramic materials of four completely excavated structures and surface collection in their immediate vicinity from Río Herrana, puna of Jujuy. Radiocarbon dates place these contexts in the Late Period. The ceramic materials were analyzed from a technological perspective, taking into account macroscopic attributes related to manufacture sequence and other attributes of the pastes. It was possible to identify open and closed morphologies, coiling technique, and a diversity of surface finishes. Pastes were classified into seven preliminary groups. The analyzed materials are similar to the pottery described in other areas of the puna of Jujuy, such as Casabindo and Yavi. This article represents an initial contribution both to the study of this kind of material in an area archaeologically little known and to the understanding of ceramic manufacture in the puna, for which there are few technological studies in spite of the relevance they have in the rest of Northwest Argentina.
