This paper analyzes the mechanisms of domestication of the llama (Lama glama) from its wild ancestor, the guanaco (Lama guanicoe), emphasizing the stages that make up the process. Some fallacies commonly believed about camelid domestication are critically discussed. A more comprehensive analytical framework is proposed, one which takes into account the interaction of two components, i.e. both animal and human behaviors. Simultaneously, the types of selection acting in the different stages of the domestication process and the archaeological evidence for each are discussed and described.
