Abstract

BOLADOS GARCIA, Paola. Procesos transnacionales en el salar de Atacama-norte de Chile: Los impactos de la minería y el turismo en las comunidades indígenas atacameñas. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.2, pp.431-443. ISSN 1850-373X.

In this paper, processes of trasnational globalization are analysed in the context of the ethnic and multicultural region of Salar de Atacama, northern Chile. The impact of mining and the tourist industry on the configuration of a transnational cultural complex in a strategic area and its geopolitical and economic importance are studied. The paper interweaves various levels of analysis (discourse and practice) agents (local, -Indigenous and non-Indigenous- and regional, national and transnational), and intersecting heterogeneous scales (community, companies, and state), which together have produced intense and dynamic partnerships and conflicts based on the control of natural and cultural resources. As such, this paper concerns the new context posed by neoliberalism in Chile post 1990 and the contradictions of its environmental policy in specific ethnic contexts.

Keywords : Transnational globalization; Salar de Atacama; Mining; Tourism; Atacameños.
