Abstract

ESCOLA, Patricia S; ELIAS, Alejandra M; GASPAROTTI, Leticia I  and  SENTINELLI, Natalia. Quebrada del río Miriguaca (Antofagasta de la Sierra, Puna meridional argentina): nuevos resultados de recientes prospecciones. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2015, vol.16, n.2, pp.383-396. ISSN 1850-373X.

The Miriguaca River Gorge, located in the micro-region of Antofagasta de la Sierra, has been subject to intensive archaeological research since 2006. The goal of research has been to increase knowledge of the use of space and resource management strategies implemented by the people who inhabited this river gorge between ca. 5000-700 years BP. As a result of the first survey, 11 prehispanic sites associated with a broad time period (ca. 3600-700 years BP) were identified, most of them located in the middle course of the Miriguaca River, and two in the eastern section of the lower course. Since then, excavation and materials analysis has been conducted at several of the sites. Subsequent surveys conducted in February 2012 recorded new sites in the western section of the lower course of the Miriguaca River, including its confluence with the Punilla River. In this paper, the evidence recovered is presented and described. This evidence contributes to the understanding of the occupational dynamics of the river gorge by extending the temporal range of occupation of the lower course of the Miriguaca River. This sector was inhabited not only at formative moments, as proposed in previous research, but also after ca. 1000 years BP. In addition, the evidence enables the discussion related to models of settlement and social and political organization proposed for the micro-region to be enriched.
