DE FEO, María Eugenia; PLISCHUK, Marcos y DESANTOLO, Bárbara. Prácticas deformatorias en el sitio Tres Cruces I (Salta, Argentina) durante el período Formativo superior: caracterización y análisis. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.1, pp.109-120. ISSN 1850-373X.
This paper provides new information concerning the types of cranial deformation documented to date at Quebrada del Toro (Salta, Argentina) during the Late Formative period. The analyzed sample comes from the excavation of Structure 3 at Tres Cruces I site. This is the only bioanthropological context recovered and systematically studied in the area with this chronology (400 - 900 AD). A high presence of this practice as well as an association of certain types of intentional modifications to the sex of the individuals is observed. On the other hand, no relation between cranial deformation type and differential mortuary treatment was registered. Similarities and variations are shown regarding the presence and frequency of documented deformation types in comparison to other samples from geographic sectors in there is evidence of interaction. In addition, when compared with other documented contexts for the area, both dated to earlier or later times, it appears that there are changes in the way in which types of cranial vault modification are distributed in time.
