Abstract

VERGARA, Francisco José  and  TRONCOSO, Andrés. El arte de la paradoja: tecnología, incisiones, superposiciones y transformaciones en el arte rupestre del Norte Semiárido de Chile. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.2, pp.227-237. ISSN 1850-373X.

Rock art is one of the most frequent types of archaeological record in the semiarid north of Chile and has been the subject of research for decades through systematic studies focused on petroglyphs and paintings. However, a third kind of mark on rock has been described in the region: linear incisions which are occasionally superimposed on petroglyphs. In this paper, the chronology and social logic of this particular kind of rock art are discussed. Through formal, stratigraphic, and technological studies we argue that these marks are an historical (post-colonial) practice which breaks the technological and visual logic of previous rock art. The characteristics of these marks suggests an intention to reject a relationship with the past, yet the reuse of ancient rocks marked with petroglyphs builds a network between past and present.

Keywords : Rock art; Technology; Incisions; Social transformation; Post-colonial.
