ZILIO, Leandro e HAMMOND, Heidi. El sitio Aguada del Barril: cambio en las prácticas mortuorias de cazadores recolectores y evidencias de interacción entre indígenas y europeos en la costa norte de Santa Cruz, Patagonia Argentina. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.3, pp.305-316. ISSN 1850-373X.
This paper presents the results of research carried out at Aguada del Barril archaeological site. The site consists of a human burial located in a canyon on the northern edge of the estuary of the Deseado River on the north coast of Santa Cruz province. The site is made up of a small funerary cave from which a male adult individual was recovered. Along with the human remains, accompanying objects such as glass and stone beads, metal fragments, and a metal earring were found. The results of the contextual, bioanthropological, and taphonomic studies, and the characteristics and composition of the accompanying objects are presented. Although all the accompanying objects are of European tradition, the site is interpreted as corresponding to an indigenous burial, due mainly to the presence of artificial cranial deformation on the individual. It is inferred that the context analyzed dates from the period of interaction between natives and Europeans. The results are discussed in the general framework of knowledge about the mortuary practices of hunter-gatherer groups that inhabited the north coast of Santa Cruz.
