Abstract

This paper reports partial results of a research whose objective is to survey the opinion of Colombian mathematics teachers on the Teaching of Mathematics by Competences (TMC). We analyzed 604 short writings of opinion about SCA, which were provided as a voluntary response to an open item included in a survey that was administered by theoretical sampling to 704 Colombian teachers. The responses are analyzed in two stages using qualitative and quantitative techniques. The first consists of reading and rereading the texts, in a process of analysis and meta-analysis until the inductive construction of categories and subcategories is achieved. The second uses quantitative multivariate statistical methods to perform a factorial analysis of multiple correspondences and a split of opinions for its subsequent description and interpretation. The results show that the teachers' opinions can be divided into four groups. In general the teachers' opinion is between favorable and neutral about the TMC although they do not develop the focus in the classroom. It is emphasized that mathematical knowledge appears detached from the competition and that a relevant role is not assigned to students, but to teachers.
