Faced with the lack of interest that high school students present regarding the subjects of Science, especially Physics, we perceive the significant need to expand studies focused on both development and test of strategies and different teaching perspectives from those often used by teachers in the classroom (expository and barely dialogue-based lessons). In this sense, we developed an Inquiry-Based Teaching Suport (IBTS) to approach Gravitation and, in this article, we aim to portray how students understand and explain the phenomenon of tides, as well as whether there was production or change of meanings related to this theme during the implementation of the IBTS. The results portrayed in the article were obtained from the analysis of the information collected through a Diagnostic Study (DS) and from the students' production along the SEI (Support Questions and Response Letter.) The IBTS was implemented for first year high school students of a public school in the state of Santa Catarina. The meanings produced by the students were evaluated in the light of the Theory of Meaningful Learning, attributed by David Ausubel. From the analysis of the students' records, derived from the proposed activities, we verified that, in comparison to the DS to which they were subjected, the research activities proposed in this work contributed positively to the production and modification of meanings related to the tidal phenomenon
