COSTAS, María Paula. THE THEME OF ANTHROPOMORPHIC HEAD IN THE PLASTIC PRODUCTION OF SOCIETIES THAT HABITATED THE NORTHWEST ARGENTINA DURING THE FIRST MILLENNIUM AD. Comechingonia [online]. 2017, vol.21, n.1, pp.1-10. ISSN 1851-0027.
Assuming that one of the functions of the images produced by the societies that inhabited Northwestern Argentina during the first millennium AD (intended for ritual and/or funeral uses in ceremonial and/or domestic contexts) would have been as sacred entities (wakas), materialization of the ancestors, we propose to analyze the iconographic representation of anthropomorphic heads and faces (without bodies) from a sample of 24 cases surveyed by the research team from the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs (CABA), Institute of Archeology and Museum (San Miguel de Tucumán), and Provincial Historical Museum "Dr. Julio Marc "(Rosario). To this goal, we will compare the iconographic record with the archaeological evidence from "Alamito" and "La Rinconada" sites in order to establish the diagnostic features that would allow us to identify in this iconography the "trophy" or "loose" heads motifs and their potential linkage with the head of the ancestor cult.
