Abstract

PEREYRA DOMINGORENA, Lucas  and  PUENTE, Verónica. A PETROGRAPHICAL APPROACH TO THE WAYS OF DOING AND THE POTTERY CIRCULATION IN THE VALLEYS & HILLS AREA OF THE ARGENTINE NORTHWEST DURING THE LAST CENTURIES OF THE FIRST MILLENIUM AD. Comechingonia [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.1, pp.1-10. ISSN 1851-0027.

This work argues about 'the ways of doing pottery' that pre-Hispanic societies had at the end of the first millennium A.D. in the southern of Calchaquí valley and the El Bolsón and Hualfín valleys (Northwestern Argentina). The petrography of ceramic pastes was analyzed using a methodology that describes the structures of the clay matrix and the identification, quantification and registration of non-plastic inclusions and of cavities. Also, the determination of the nature of the tempering was essential to link pieces of possible homologous origin. The macro-regional character of the sample made it possible to detect circulation of the certain pieces and manufacturing regularities and postulate the presence of a ceramics manufacturing savoir faire, that is, ways of making vessels with recurrences to larger scales and local peculiarities within these modes.

Keywords : raw materials, production, exchange, ways of doing.
