Abstract

IZAGUIRRE, Joaquín; FERRARI, Alejandro; LEIBOWICZ, Iván  and  MOYANO, Ricardo. ANDEAN SKYSCAPES STUDY. A CASE FROM NORWEAST ARGENTINA. Comechingonia [online]. 2021, vol.25, n.2, pp.83-114. ISSN 1851-0027.

This paper presents a case study that exhibits the potential of studying Andean celestial landscapes from a virtual archeoastronomy perspective. Specifically, it focuses on one of the public spaces of Las Pailas archaeological site -SSalCac 18 (1)-, Salta, Argentine. A digital planetarium software (Stellarium) is used to test astronomical observation horizons and certain light phenomena during sunrise at specific dates. Throughout this paper, we offer a detailed account of the procedures and software used to carry out the study. Results highlight a light phenomenon that occurs at dawn and entails the participation of a specific rock within the public space and the surrounding topography, including a mountain pass and Mount Meléndez - the most important and visible summit at Nevado de Cachi.

Keywords : Andean skyscapes; Virtual archeoastronomy; Late Intermediate Period; Stellarium; 3D Models.
