In the area surrounding Bayo Hill, in the Santa Cruz province, a serie of rock shelters and open-air sites have been identified. This sector is located in a strategic position between the mountainous region in the north of the province, and the western sector of the Deseado Massif. From a geographical point of view, it can be thought of as a connecting space between both regions. In addition, it is located in the vicinity of two areas of great importance for regional archaeology; Pampa del Asador and the Pinturas River basin. This study presents the first body of data generated from the work carried out at the Cerro Bayo 2. Although these are preliminary results, they do suggest a logistical use of the site in its later occupations, associated with materials of industrial origin, and foreign fauna. Furthermore, rock art contributes to the notion that the site has been used at least since the mid- Holocene. Characteristics in lithic technology identified in earlier layers also coincide with this. The studied evidence provides new information for an area that has been scarcely investigated, and thereby will serve as a basis for future projects.
