Anxiety Disorders (AD) with comorbid Personality Disorders (PD) is associated with severe and chronic symptoms. New developments suggest that this might be related with the use of dysfunctional emotion regulation strategies. The aim of this study was to compare the use of emotion regulation strategies in patients with anxiety disorders with and without comorbid PD. The sample consisted of 112 subjects with AD (33 of them with comorbid personality disorder). The results showed that patients with comorbid anxiety and personality disorders had more severe symptoms and report less use of Positive Reappraisal, Problem Solving, Emotional Discharge and Seeking Alternative Rewards. Use of Positive Reappraisal, Seeking Guidance and Support and Problem Solving presented strong negative correlations with anxiety severity scores. Findings suggest the necessity of developing specific interventions for this group of patients by promoting interventions aimed to reduce ruminative processes and encouraging the use of adaptive strategies such as Positive Reappraisal and Problem Solving.
