This work presents a description and an analysis of the health care practices of institutionalized older people. Methodology: Semistructured interviews (15) were conducted with people aged 60 years old or over, both sexes and independent and semi-independent condition for the development of everyday activities, who are long term residents at a State Institution, which is located in Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires. Results: Older people interviewees construct their health care practices based on representations about care and dependence, previous experiences about care, and through transactional processes with the knowledge that operates in the Institution. Health care practices are interpreted as actions of self-care and self- responsibility. The independence, which is understood as the capacity to perform individually, it is considered a condition for the exercise of autonomy and ownership of rights.
