This paper presents some aspects of a research program launched in 2002, funded by UBACyT P803, P806 and 20020090100054, research projects. Its overall objective is to carry out a follow up study on the relationship between mother-infant dyadic affective regulation, the affective self-regulation of the child in the first 5 years of life, and maternal subjective variables. This stage of the research, focused on 4-5 years, explores child´s play and its place as affects moderator, as well as mediator in social interactions and precursor of the symbolization processes in children. Some conceptualizations of play in preschool age are presented, together with some preliminary results obtained through the analysis of videotapes of mother-child play situations at 4-5 years. We present relationships between different levels of complexity of symbolic play, and modes convergent and divergent play interaction observed in the sample.
