Abstract

BOMBELLI, J. Ignacio; MURATORI, Marcela; MELE, Silvia V.  and  ZUBIETA, Elena M.. Intergroup forgiveness and reconciliation processes in Argentina: psychosociological contributions to the study of the effects of state violence. Anu. investig. [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.1, pp.119-126. ISSN 1851-1686.

This paper analyzes the level of knowledge, perceived sincerity and effectiveness of public apologies made after state violence occurred during the last military dictatorship. It also studies the willingness to forgive and the desirability of reconciliation. The sample was composed by 518 participants (age: M = 35.58, SD= 13.62) among which were direct, indirect victims of violence, and unaffected people. Results show little knowledge of apologies and low levels of perceived effectiveness in its restorative goal. Differences are observed according to the ideological self-positioning and the age of participants. The youngest and the persons positioned ideologically towards left consider less necessary the apologies, exhibit a minor belief on the willingness to forgive by those affected by collective violence and, to a lesser extent, express wishes for reconciliation.

Keywords : Intergroup Forgiveness; Reconciliation; Restorative Justice; Military Dictatorship.
