This paper makes a critical review of biomedical reductionism that has dominated the conceptualization of harmful drinking and introduces the approach proposed by Eduardo Menendez about the process of alcohol. Then exposed as a sociocultural barrier to accessibility, professional conceptions about the harmful use of alcohol and its effects on the practice of health care. The methodology adopted, area and population covered in the research whose aim was relieving concepts of professionals working in primary care regarding alcohol consumption is presented. After presenting the main indings, considerations that should be taken to promote greater display of alcohol consumption among those working in primary care, to encourage more timely assistance interventions and effective prevention measures are established.
