Abstract

MIKULIC, Isabel M.; CABALLERO, Romina  and  ARUANNO, Yanina. Socio-emotional competencies in elderly in the city of Buenos Aires. Anu. investig. [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.1, pp.277-284. ISSN 1851-1686.

The increasing elderly population represent new and significant challenges across cultures. The studies were focused on demographic, cognitive and physical factors, but emotional factors were poorly investigated specially in elder people. The objective of this study is to evaluate the pattern of socio-emotional skills in 53 older adults (M = 69, SD = 4.2), both genders, and compare their differences with 53 young adults. All participants were administered the Socio Emotional Competency Inventory (ICSE, Mikulic, 2013). The results indicate that older adults show significantly higher levels of optimism, assertiveness, emotional regulation and autonomy, than younger. These findings may allow to design new interventions focused on developing new skills. Also, would enhance and improve skills acquired but not yet developed, with the ultimate goal that the elderly may have resources to deal with the changes inherent to this life stage.

Keywords : Elderly; Socioemotional competences; Psychological assessment.
