FORMOSO, Jesica; INJOQUE-RICLE, Irene; JACUBOVICH, Silvia  y  BARREYRO, J. Pablo. Subitizing and counting: is the enumeration of small and large numerosities based on different processes?. Anu. investig. [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.2, pp.253-260. ISSN 1851-1686.

There are basic math skills of early development that are considered precursors to more complex skills. These basic skills include subitizing and counting. While both refer to the enumeration of items, that is, counting objects one by one and assigning an overall value to the set, subitizing is the ability to enumerate rapidly and without error a small set of objects, while counting is the ability to enumerate large sets which is slower and less accurate. Numerous studies investigate whether subitizing and counting are in fact different processes and how they each relate to attention and working memory capacity. This paper aims to explore the construction of the concept of subitizing presenting the different theories that seek to explain it and the empirical evidence available.Current theoretical positions regarding the relationship between subitizing and counting and the role of attention and working memory in both skills are varied. More research is needed in this regard.

Palabras clave : Math skills; Enumeration; Subitizing; Counting.
