This article contributes to our understanding of the transmission of written culture in the context of the university based on ethnographic material about classroom styles, pedagogical practices and the formation of readers. The impact of digital technology, the role of the book, the relationship between research and academic excellence and a "new" profile of the student are discussed in light of material collected by means of participant observation and interviews with a sample of university professors.
