This work explores the reconstruction of the past by the inhabitants of an acampamento sem-terra, settled in the Zona da Mata Norte, Pernambuco, Brazil. A common element emerges strongly from the stories of the people that converged to this place: the reference to a peasant experience. By focusing the analysis on the social conditions that make memory construction possible, we try to show the centrality of the 'work in the fields' as a fundamental feature of the construction of a peasant memory. The 'work in the fields' is an important element in the affirmation of a peasant identity. The memory of a rural past emphasises a common aspect of the various life histories and traverses them in their heterogeneity. Furthermore, as it conveys relevant meanings in other social universes, the identification as a rural worker opens a place for dialogue among diverse languages.
