Abstract

MAFFIA, Marta M. La mujer caboverdeana en la Argentina, entre tradición y modernidad. Avá [online]. 2009, n.14. ISSN 1851-1694.

In order to analyze the topic suggested in this paper, firstly we refer to the study of the Cape Verdean family organization and to the patriarchal ideology which supports it as regards the social organization/ formation of the archipelago and its evolution, as it is a society mainly based on the old "enslaving" institution. We briefly developed the profile of the first islanders arriving in Argentina and the impact this had on the social structure configuration and on the massive emigration of the population. From this context, it could be understood the role of women in the Cape Verdean concept of Mediterranean tradition. We explored the notions of machism, virginity and chastity (dignity) and their connection with the migratory phenomenon, for then analyzing the Cape Verdean woman in Argentina, highlighting different stages (from their arrival to nowadays), with special emphasis on the changes and on the "ambivalent inter-game" between "tradition" and "modernity" that take place in this particular migratory context. "escravócrata".

Keywords : Cape Verdean Woman; Family; Tradition; Modernity.
