Abstract

This article is about memory of los antiguos (the ancients ones) in a southwestern locale of Salta (Valles Calchaquíes, Salta, Argentina). In this area the aboriginal people was subdued during the 17th century following an ambivalent process of ethnic invisibilization and persistent use of ethnic markers to define the subaltern population up to the present. By analyzing Cachi subalterns' oral narratives and spatial practices I attempt to interpret the modes in which they construe a memory of los antiguos, paying attention to the notions of space and time contained therein and the identity correlate they presuppose.
