Abstract

LIFSCHITZ, Javier. Comunidades etnicas no Brasil e modernizaçao. Avá [online]. 2011, n.18. ISSN 1851-1694.

Taking into account Tönnies' concepts, in this article we discuss the relationship between ethnic communities and modernization in Brazil. We analyze this relationship in two moments. Firstly, we consider some case studies from representative authors of "community research", done in Brazil during modernization processes from 1940 to 1960. Secondly, we deal with quilombolas communities since the implementation of public policies in Lula's government. It is in this context that we discuss, considering the author's research in northern areas of Rio de Janeiro, the role of modern agents in the reconstruction of "communities of spirit" and that we suggest the term "neocommunities" to represent the actual phase of transformation.

Keywords : Ethnic communities; Traditional communities in Brazil; Community and social movement.
